This workshop offers an introduction to the heartful, evidence based world of Child Centered Play Therapy. Learn about why Child Centered Play Therapy can be such an effective form of counselling and psychotherapy for children from 2-10 years old and about the heart and essence of this work.

- An overview of the principles, philosophy and practices of Child Centered Play Therapy
- What is Play Therapy, why Play Therapy can be so helpful for children and the different types of play we see in Play Therapy
- Who Child Centered Play Therapy is recommended for and contraindications
- Learn about the therapeutic relationship being at the heart of Child Centered Play Therapy and how to develop a relationship of safety and trust with the child
- Empathy and the four key healing messages: I am here, I hear you, I understand and I care
- Setting up a therapeutic playroom and guidelines for the selection of toys and materials: Includes many helpful hints!
- The tote bag playroom and adapting spaces for Play Therapy
- Learn a model of the stages children may go through in the Play Therapy process: Includes two case presentations showing how children can present in the different stages and the power of Child Centered Play Therapy for growth and healing

- Embracing the different aspects of freedom and structure in Child Centered Play Therapy: Many Play Therapists have one area more developed than the other such as being warm and sensitive but finding it challenging setting limits and boundaries
- Play Therapy skills based training: Therapeutic ways of responding to children including tracking, empathy and reflecting feelings, fostering creativity, following the child's lead, engaging in role plays and the wonderful whisper technique
- The highly effective ACT Limit Setting model and Play Therapy case scenarios
- The importance of play behaviours and themes in Play Therapy
- Working in Child Centered Play Therapy with children presenting in different ways and joys and challenges
- Differences in working with children in Play Therapy to working with adults in counselling
- An overview of the important intake interview and Child Centered Play Therapy assessment process

- Demonstrate an understanding of the skills, philosophy and practices of Child Centered Play Therapy
- Explain how working with children in Play Therapy is different to working with adults in counselling
- Outline the key areas for consideration in the Play Therapy Intake Interview and assessment process
- Identify the role of parents as partners in the Play Therapy process and important considerations

- An informative and heartful interview with Play Therapy trainers and coordinators of the REACH (Relationship Enhancement and Child Harmony) Play Therapy Project in schools, Dr Jeff Cochran and Nancy Cochran from the Faculty of the University of Tennessee.
- Reflections on Working in Child Centered Play Therapy with Johnny, a Boy on the Autism Spectrum. Hear Jewel talk about some of her experiences in her Play Therapy work with Johnny. Jewel shares about joys and challenges that arose for her and the profound impact working with Johnny had on her. Gain deeper insights into the Child Centered Play Therapy approach and the power of unconditional acceptance and empathy in the therapeutic relationship.
- Ethics and Play Therapy: This is an important area for Play Therapists as there are many ethical challenges that can arise in working with children in Play Therapy. Hear Jodi share case examples and discuss different aspects relating to this topic.
